The Baltimore Ravens was renovated in 1996, when the owner Art Modell, then the Cleveland Browns, announced his intention to move his team from Cleveland to Baltimore. Controversy ended when representatives of Cleveland and the NFL agreed to a February 8, 1996. The agreement stipulates that the Browns name, colors, design files remain Cleveland uniform franchise. The 2000 season was the defense led the Ravens defensive coordinator Marvin Lewis. He has been developing a rock solid unit that has emerged as one of the most formidable defenses in history of the NFL. The Ravens' defense set a new NFL record for holding opposing teams to 165 points in total. Team beat the record set previously by the Chicago Bears in 1986 of 187 points for a 16-game season. Linebacker Ray Lewis was named Defensive Player of the year, with two of his teammates defensive, Sam Adams and Rod Woodson made the Pro Bowl.
Baltimore went to the Super Bowl XXXV in Tampa against the New York Giants, cruising to a 34-7 victory of first championship in its history. The Ravens recorded four sacks and forced five turnovers, one of whom was Kerry Collins interception returned for touchdown by Duane Starks. The best score of the Giants is the return of Ron Dixon kickoff for another touchdown (after Starks interception return), but responded immediately Baltimore with a TD return by Jermaine Lewis. The Ravens became the third team wild card to win a Super Bowl championship. Interception return a touchdown, followed by two touchdown punt return, set the fastest time in the history of the Super Bowl three touchdowns were scored.
