With regard to the veracity and accuracy of our memories

This scheme is adapted from a document I give my students a living writing. The above points apply to writing in general and to write our life stories in particular.

I. Why are we writing?
A. Frank McCord in Writer's Digest, febrero 99, p. 19: "But now I realize everyone has a story. There is nothing significant to be meaningful. This is not what happens to you, but how you look. "
BP Thomas Frank, How to write the story of his life: "God created people because he loves stories." "The People are more happy when we created them. "There is a resurgence of activity today in search of our roots and family history.
C. stank black and Elements of Style: Writing is a way of thinking.
Rick D. DeMarinis, art and craft of short story: The story is how we make sense of the world.
E. Robin Hemley, turn life in writing fiction is a process of discovery. Fun part is to learn why he wrote what he wrote.
F. Writer 's Digest, August 00, pp. 20-21: You may find that most of the reward for writing … evolve during the process of bringing their ideas to the page. By revealing more of himself on the page, can observe patterns in the way of thinking, acting, reacting to people and situations. This self-awareness can help you make better decisions, understand difficult situations to manage their feelings. It is a powerful way to find answers to some of their toughest questions. And we may recall that there is no easy answers, this is the root of wisdom. Life becomes richer, observations and clearer meaning.
G. DeMarinis: Everyone will tell the story of his life, taking account of a little encouragement. This is the man to do something.
II. Why do I have to write well?
A. DeMarinis: Poor writing can distort the experience.
Various sources B: Writing is rewriting. Craft moved from the back of the mind to the front during the rewrite. Leave the first project to be rude and poorly trained.
C. DeMarinis: Say everything that needs to be said in few words as possible.
D. Aristotle: "the proper name and a peculiar thing."
E. Hemley: The words are the way to see an event.
F. DeMarinis: Be aware of the text selection. Develop an ear for languages. The sounds in a sentence can be obtained three-dimensional images in the mind.
III. With regard to the veracity and accuracy of our memories
James ODA in the Reader's Summary: "The memory is a device of the mind and memory. In this sense, every autobiography is a work of fiction, and all work of fiction is an autobiography. "
Olmstead, Robert B., Elements of the writing craft: Memory is a narrative composed from personal experience. It depends on memory, which is between the truth and the way the writer sees the truth. Located in a memoir is intensely personal and emotional.
C. DeMarinis: The story is always partial. Hidden in fiction is necessary, and Necessity is the truth. We are in need of sympathy and approval, and wants to be understood.
D. The Write Stuff (a compilation): The memory is what people do. What do remember that it is never the case. Memory is faulty.
E. Hemley: What you chose to tell, and how, and what they have chosen not to not be saying what kind of writer you are.
F. Hemley: memory plays tricks. Never let the truth in the way of a good story. It is more important for a work event that to be true.
G. Tom Chiarella, writing dialogue: a letter stating what happened is less important than the interpretation of these events.
H. Olmstead: What makes an important experience?
I. Marcia Golub, I'd Rather Be Writing: Old memories are mysterious. Much of what is given narrative unit trying to understand them. From all that has past childhood, why I remember these things?
J. Dwight v. Swain, Creating Characters: How to Build Popular History: This is not the experience that creates a shock, but the way the character reacts. (If you write your story is you.)
K. Hemley: What is the most powerful is often what you want to hide.
L. Hemley: digging, trying to understand why a particular event stands out.
Mr. Hemley: The distance from the place we see more clearly. What I remember is nothing more important to you … the feeling that I gave you. A description must be rooted in the character's consciousness, which says both on the character on the field.
N. Stephen Wilbers, Keys to good writing: "Given that all writing is a measure can not represent fictitious … reality … use the elements of artifice to your advantage. "
W Pablo Picasso: "Art is a lie that makes us understand the truth."
IV. Putting ongoing
William A. Zinsser, write well: to believe in the validity of your life!
B. DeMarinis: The act of writing sentences produced more sentences. This sometimes leads inspiration.
C. Hemley: real life has a command of a lot of imagination and understanding.
D. s Writer's Digest in February '99: Timeline to avoid as an organizing principle. Instead, the keyframes free list.
E. Opening must be "clear and economically" to capture the reader.
V. See my article entitled "My favorite to correct errors (not make these mistakes, and his writing place higher in writing) the majority." Good writing!
